Rajasthan goats to be tagged with QR code for quality
To ensure quality and provide safe-to-eat goat meat for consumers, the Rajasthan government has decided to tag goats meant for consumption with QR codes. This will help buyers to check the last date of vaccination, diseases of goats and medicines given for it. All information will be available online and customers can also order tagged goats online.
The state has the largest population of goats in the country, with the Livestock Census 2019 recording over 20 million goats. The government has started a pilot project for the same in Pisangan gram panchayat in Ajmer.
This initiative has been undertaken by the Rajasthan Agriculture Competitiveness Project (RACP) along with the Rajasthan Animal Husbandry Department. RACP has created the Pisangan Mahila Bakri Palak Producer Company Ltd (PMBPPCL) in Pisangan with a group of women shareholders who will run the project.
At present, 350 women are shareholders in the company in Pisangan which has set a target of tagging 10,000 animals in the first phase.
Currently, only the Sirohi breed of goats are tagged and sold under the project. Later, after the project is implemented in the entire state, other breeds will also be included. While the project is only meant for meat production now, it will later include milk as well.
